Dear Members & Friends of the Chamber
"Canada's plans are ambitious and transformative, providing much needed certainty in these uncertain times." Finance Minister François-Philippe Champagne assured our members during his address at our recent AGM lunch at the House of Lords. His emphasis on long-term investment strategy and economic resilience resonated strongly with the audience as Canada and the UK face unsettled times ahead.
Since our last e-newsletter several significant developments have reshaped Canada's economic outlook. Recent news of a technical recession surprised many as Canada's forecasts were generally positive for 2026. The economy marginally contracted for two consecutive quarters, though economists believe that this could potentially be quickly reversed. Read more here.
There is more positive news on the energy front. Canada has signed what it hopes will be the first in a series of LNG export agreements with Europe. Last week, Canada and Germany concluded a deal that will involve shipping one million tonnes per year of LNG from Ksi Lisims, a proposed project on British Columbia's coast, to Germany via its national energy utility company, Securing Energy for Europe (SEFE). This move positions Canada to fill the energy supply gap left by Russia's invasion of Ukraine. Read more on these developments here.
Against this shifting economic backdrop and as we prepare for our 17th Annual Canadian Chief Economists' Lunch & Panel Debate, this edition we focus on Financial Services news. Articles recently written by our event speakers provide insights into housing, the technical recession in Canada and how to interpret the UK's GDP data to determine the economy's underlying momentum. Read more on these recent insights below.
