Dear Members & Friends of the Chamber
Canada-UK Chamber of Commerce is working hard in partnership with the new Government in Ottawa, Provincial governments, and the UK government to strengthen two-way trade and investment between Canada and the UK. This month we held our AGM followed by lunch at the House of Lords with Guest Speaker Tim Houston, Premier of Nova Scotia who outlined the province’s massive and untapped energy resources -especially in natural gas, windpower and geothermal/hydro – and its relationship with the UK in defence, wine and seafood, life sciences, fintech and ICT, ocean tech, critical minerals, tourism and education.
Our Chamber is ready to assist the unlocking of international investment, and expanding markets for Canadian exporters, to increase Canada’s competitiveness, and help shape emerging regulatory frameworks. In that regard the Secretariat team will be in Canada next week on a 4-city visit (in Toronto, Montreal, Calgary and Vancouver) as part of a CA-UK Export Roadshow. There is still time to register to join these events which are proving very popular -see our website for more details: https://www.canada-uk.org/events
This eNewsletter we focus on news from our member banks and S&P Global with commentary on whether the Bank of Canada could cut rates three more times (Desjardins); whether banks are recession ready (S&P Global); a look at CAD (Scotiabank); how Canada is 'avoiding the worst, but far from the best' (BMO); AI and banking sector news (TD Bank and RBC); National Bank's outlook on Canadian airlines; and the announcement that capital markets head Harry Culham will succeed Victor Dodig as CEO of CIBC.
Event news: coming up next month we have our Annual Canadian Chief Economists panel debate and lunch on 19 June with six leading economists from the aforementioned banks at the magnificent Drapers’ Hall. We invite you to register and come along and support this signature event.
On 25 June there is the Canada-UK Business Summit half day at Canada House, and on 27 June the Annual Canada Day Pancake breakfast - if you wish to get involved and sponsor these events do drop us a line. More events will be added to our website over the next few coming days including a webinar on 2 July the effects of the tariffs on the UK, Canada and the US, outlook for rates and other geopolitical headwinds with S&P Global, CIBC, Marsh and others. Keep checking our website and your in-boxes.
